Pusha T Interview With Ask Men

Pusha T Interview

Check out Pusha T's latest interview with Ask Men where he speaks on a number of things including the new tour with Fabolous, his upcoming album and more.

Pusha T is flying high. The G.O.O.D. Music lyricist and Clipse torchbearer is slated to release one of the year’s most highly anticipated rap albums with his solo debut, My Name Is My Name (July 16th), and he’s enlisting a slew of heavy hitters for the effort including Timbaland, Pharrell and, of course, Kanye West. Pusha is currently on tour with Fabolous for the "Life Is So Exciting" tour. After his second NYC show, the rapper, clad in a leather apron, talked to AskMen about what he has cooking up.

Sowmya Krishnamurthy (SK): My Name Is My Name is one of the most anticipated rap albums this year. Is the excitement palpable to you?
Pusha T (PT): Yeah. It’s hot outside. It’s, like, really hot outside. It’s just really good to see. I feel like I’m watching music change. Man, when we dropped “Numbers On The Boards” the other day, man, I just feel like an energy of like, real hip-hop, people sort of like gravitating toward it.

SK: “Numbers On The Boards” makes me want to punch someone in the face.

PT: 100%. Yeah.

SK: The producer of the track, Kanye West, decided to release “Numbers On The Boards” in response to Jay-Z’s “Open Letter.” How did that happen?
PT: In all honesty, they dropped “Open Letter” at, like, 7:00 in the morning, and me and ‘Ye were talking about it, like, 8:00 a.m.

SK: You’re awake at 8:00 a.m.?
PT: Oh, I’m up at 6:00 a.m. every morning because I have a lot to do. Plenty. I work out probably at like 8:00. I gotta eat at 6:00 so therefore I can workout at 8:00.

SK: Then what happened?
PT: So I called Pharrell first and then I called ‘Ye in Paris. I’m like “Yo! Did you hear this record or whatever?” 'Ye was just like, “Yeah, and I’m sitting here right now with this ‘Numbers On The Boards’ and I’m just letting you know I’m gonna put this out today.” I was like “Did you call Def Jam?” 'cause people don’t know there’s so many like political things that go on and legal things that go on with samples and stuff. Ye’s like, “No, I didn’t. I’m putting it out in 15 minutes actually.” I was rehearsing in New York for my Coachella show and he called me and was like, “Listen to this.” He was like , “Oh, it’s going out now. Right now.”
