(July 28, 2014 – New York, NY)  Island Records artist Shawn Mendes, hailed by Billboard as “Music’s First Vine Star” (issue dated July 26th), transitions from teen viral online sensation to major best-selling status as his brand new self-titled 4-song EP took over the #1 position on iTunes in less than 30 minutes.  The EP marks Shawn’s second #1 iTunes smash this month, following up his debut single “Life of The Party,” which vaulted to the top spot less than one hour after its release three weeks ago.  Now available on iTunes HERE.

“Life of The Party,” which will be impacting at Top 40 radio this week, kicks off the new EP, which also includes “Show You,” “One Of Those Nights,” and “The Weight,” all of which were co-written by Shawn. With over 150,000 first week single sales for “Life of The Party”, Shawn became the youngest artist ever to break the Billboard Hot 100's Top 25 with their first chart entry.  In the 24 hours following the release and #1 chart debut of “Life of The Party,” there were over 2 million mentions of the single on Twitter, skyrocketing it to the #1 position on Billboard's Twitter Music charts.  The song went on to jump inside the iTunes Top 5 in 13 other countries (including Brazil, Sweden and Norway) and Top 10 in 20 countries.

A major interview profile on Shawn in the pages of Entertainment Weekly (issued dated July 11th) was followed up in the magazine seven days later with a Breaking Big feature (“Who the Hell Is…Shawn Mendes?”), as the 15-year star reflected on his phenomenal chart success: “I looked on iTunes and there was ‘Rude’ by Magic! and ‘Problem’ by Ariana Grande [featuring Iggy Azalea]– seeing my song up there with them is a feeling I can’t describe’.”

After appearing across the country on the Magcon Tour of Vine stars this month, Shawn performed live on the FOX 5 morning television show Good Day New York, and ABC’s Live with Kelly & Michael. This past weekend on July 25th, he began his first major tour engagement, on the road across the U.S. and Canada with Austin Mahone’s Secret Tour. Dates run through September, co-starring Island label mates The Vamps.

In less than one year since he first began using the digital platform Vine to record himself singing covers, Shawn Mendes has become today’s most buzzed-about young artist.  In late 2013, over 2,000 fans showed up to the Canadian native’s first public appearance in Toronto's Dundas Square, and his first headline show in Toronto sold out in under 24 hours.  In January 2014, artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered Shawn online after finding his cover of A Great Big World's song “Say Something” on YouTube, and brought it to the attention of his now-label Island Records.
Shawn, who turns 16 on August 8th, has accumulated over 16 million YouTube views as his clips have spread across Vine (over 2.9 million followers), YouTube (700,000 subscribers), Instagram (over 1.5 million followers), Twitter (over 1.45 million followers), Facebook (over 485,462 likes), and every online social outlet imaginable.  Heading into the summer, Shawn is just getting started, writing and recording his own music, and growing into one of our brightest new stars.
