The Hot Seat: Parachute

Parachute

Parachute has just released their first album Losing Sleep in May, and now they’re answering our burning questions in this week’s Hot Seat.

1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.

Parachute: When we were in college we took a road trip to Atlanta. Along the way our van completely died and we had to abandon the van so we rented a Uhaul with no windows. We ended up driving 9 hours to Atlanta in a Uhaul with no windows while our friend from New Zealand got us pulled over by the cops when he stuck his head out the window. There were 6 people in the back underneath some sleeping bags trying desperately not to get noticed by the cop that pulled us over. Eventually we made it and ended up costing us as much money to get a new car as it cost us to rent the Uhaul. And I think there were maybe 10 or 15 people at that show so it was definitely a labor of love to get there.

2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?

Parachute: Well we just graduated from college last spring so we don’t want to take any classes right now. It’s done, it’s over. I’ve been there I’ve done that. We all did that, we’re finished with it so my answer is none!

3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?

Parachute: Las Vegas was pretty crazy, it’s fun but in it’s own way. It’s fun in a kind of cheap and dirty way. You feel really cheap and dirty when you leave there at least. But I think New York City is my favorite place, and I know it’s the rest of the band’s too. It’s fun to see friends and hang out in the city and do ‘city things’.

4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?

Parachute: Don’t sleep with gum in your mouth. I woke up with it in my hair last night

5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?

Parachute: I’d say the new Kings of Leon record is playing a lot in the van right now. Also, Ryan Adams’ new record. Anything Ryan Adams really. We actually just got into Bill Joel – The Stranger is great.

6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.

Parachute: I’m addicted to Lost. I know a bunch of the other guys like Entourage. I like Entourage too, but Lost just caught me and won’t let me go. There’s a book called the Lost City of Zi. It’s a very good book. It’s about an explorer going in to the Amazon. True story.

7. What’s the first concert you ever saw - how was it?

Parachute: No Doubt at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California. I was in 4th grade and Cake and the Vandals opened for them. It was a great show. It was their first big arena tour and Gwen Stefani was amazing.

8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?

Parachute: 1) Vitamin water bottles for numerous reasons. They come in very handy to keep you hydrated and get rid of the hydration when you have to pee.

2) Our laptops. It’s good to stay in touch.

3) A Basketball. I try to play basketball in every city I go to so we try to be prepared.

9. Who are your major musical influences?

Parachute: Anyone who can write a melody is someone I really appreciate. Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul Simon, Ryan Adams, bands like Coldplay, U2, Maroon 5.

Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?

Parachute: If you’re in college, make sure you only schedule you classes Tuesday – Thursday. Pretend that Friday classes don’t exist when you are scheduling and, just stay away from the Friday classes!!
