At the ripe young age of 21, all the musical elements have quickly tumbled together for mega-talented singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumental Chicago sensation Jeremih, who exploded into history last month with the #1 MySpace song for the past 3 weeks, “Birthday Sex.” As of this writing, the track has logged over 60 million plays.
“Birthday Sex” is #1 at Urban radio for four (4) weeks, # 2 at Rhythm radio, the # 1 Most added at Pop Radio last week, is holding the # 4 position on Billboard’s HOT 100 chart and is # 1 on Billboard’s Hot Ringmasters chart. After the “Birthday Sex” video debut last week on BET, comes news that Jeremih will perform at the upcoming BET Awards pre-show event, scheduled for Sunday night, June 28th. The video has also been added to MTV, MTV HITS, MTV U and MTV JAMS. It all leads up to the release of JEREMIH, the self-titled debut album set to arrive in the physical and digital marketplace on June 30th.
Jeremih [Felton] – also heard with fellow Def Jam artist Fabolous on his current hit, “It’s My Time” – has been something of a musical prodigy since early childhood on Chicago’s infamous Southside. He was given his first set of drums at age three, and by the time he got to Morgan Park High School, was adept at the traps, saxophone, piano, and bass guitar. Jeremih’s intelligence enabled him to skip junior year, graduate high school at age 16, and enter the University of Illinois as an engineering science major.
But when he started getting involved with on-campus talent shows, music took over. He transferred to Columbia College, one of Chicago’s premier art schools, and began collaborating on demos with music student Mick Schultz. Mick’s mastery of ProTools led to the creation of “My Ride,” Jeremih’s first song to hit local radio airwaves on Power-92 (also streaming at the MySpace site). “Birthday Sex” followed in October 2008, and Jeremih was soon the talk of Chicago, a local hometown hero.
The sound was so distinctive that Mick was retained to produce Jeremih’s album, which will include such standout tracks as “Runway” (inspired by the fierce swagger of Tyra Banks and those catwalk beats); “My Sunshine” (in which Jeremih finds light on a gloomy day in the company of his loved ones) and “Starting All Over” (channeling Stevie Wonder’s classic soul by crafting a song about new love.)
“I have no boundaries,” Jeremih says. “It excites me to see what there is to come. I’m a writer, I’m a singer, I’m a producer, and I can play instruments. I feel like that’s what sets me apart from all the other artists out there.”
